Formlabs opens orders for the $699 Form Studio 1 resin printer

Formlabs has opened orders for the Form Studio 1, an MSLA resin printer from $699, shipping from 16 November 2026. Here is what is known and what a print farm should check.

Formlabs has started taking orders for the Form Studio 1, a resin printer that is the cheapest in its range. Orders are open worldwide from $699, with shipping scheduled to begin on 16 November 2026. The printer was shown at TCT Shenzhen.

It is a resin machine, so it will not replace filament printers in most farms. It does matter if you sell resin parts or are thinking about adding a resin line.

What Formlabs has announced

According to Formlabs, Form Studio 1 is meant to be the most affordable professional resin printer, and the first and only UL GREENGUARD Gold certified resin printer when used with Alpha Resins and the VOC Extractor. UL GREENGUARD is a third-party certification that addresses indoor air quality.

The certification has conditions. Formlabs says it applies to Form Studio 1 used with Alpha Resins, and the VOC Extractor is part of that setup. The VOC Extractor also works with the Form 4 and Form 4B, but it has only been tested and certified with Form Studio 1 printing Alpha Resins.

The details that matter

Print engine. The engine is built on what Formlabs calls Low Force Display technology, with a custom lens array and 28 LEDs producing a 6 mW/cm² light field. Pixel resolution is 35 µm, with anti-aliasing. Formlabs says that is 30% finer than the Form 4.

Build volume. 20.0 × 12.5 × 23.5 cm, or 5.9 litres. The technology is MSLA.

Workflow features. Listed features include factory calibration, a 7-inch touchscreen, automatic resin handling, toolless part removal, a camera for remote monitoring, and Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB-C connectivity. The same list states no debris detection.

Speed and reliability. Formlabs says most jobs finish in under two hours. 3D Printing Industry reports a 98% print success rate, but the figure carries an asterisk in Formlabs' own materials and the conditions are not disclosed. Formlabs' footnote, as quoted by Engineering.com, bases it on third-party testing of the Form 4. Reliability testing on the Form Studio 1 itself is still in progress. Treat the number as unproven for this machine.

Materials. Formlabs launched six new Alpha Resins. They are low-odor, certified for long-term skin safety, and priced from $29 per litre. Alpha Model Resin is supported only on the Form Studio 1. I could not confirm from the sources I read which other resins the printer supports, so check before you plan around third-party materials.

Prices and packages. Formlabs' store lists three Founders Edition packages:

Package Price (USD) Includes
Base $699 Printer, resin tank, build platform
Complete $948 Adds Form Studio Wash+Cure
Professional $1,647 Adds Form Wash V2 and Form Cure V2

The VOC Extractor is a separate $179 add-on. The Founder's Edition colours run through 30 November 2026, or while supplies last.

What it means for a print farm

This section is my analysis, not Formlabs' claims.

The headline price is for a printer, a tank and a platform. Washing and curing are extra, and so is the extractor if you want the certified setup. Budget for the $948 or $1,647 package, plus the extractor, before you compare it with other resin machines.

The certification matters most if resin printing would sit in an office, a spare room or a shared unit with no extraction. That is the situation it is aimed at. It does not remove the rest of resin handling, and it only covers Alpha Resins with the extractor. If you want to use cheaper third-party resin, the certification will not apply.

For farm planning, the build volume is modest. The sources do not say how many parts a plate holds or how long a full plate takes, so you cannot yet work out throughput or cost per part. The missing debris detection and the unproven reliability figure are the two things I would want answered before putting it on customer orders. The claimed 98% is not enough on its own, because every failed resin print costs you resin, time and a re-run.

Shipping starts 16 November, so independent long-run results will not exist until after that. A cautious approach is to wait for farm-scale reports, or buy one unit and track its failure rate on your own jobs.

One practical point for mixed fleets: this is a different workflow from filament. Resin needs washing, curing and chemical handling, and it will need its own labour time and consumables in your costing. Add those before quoting a price.
